Rituals Before Death

The period in which an individual is in the course of dying is commonly referred to as Saqaraat, or the agony of death. As per Islamic Shariah, the following steps should be performed:

Position the individual such that his/her feet are in the direction of Qibla. Prior to doing so, you must seek permission from the individual or the wali (next of kin/personal representative).

Recite the Shahaada with the individual. If possible, have him/her repeat the following:

Tawheed
Nubuwwat
Imamat
Wilayah of the Twelve Imams or Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness from Allah)
Recite as many surahs of the Qur’an as possible, preferably the following:

Surah Yā Sīn (36)
Surah Aş Şāffāt (37)
Surah Al ‘Aĥzāb (33)
It is also recommended to recite Ayatul Kursi.

The following actions are considered Makrooh:

To leave a dying person alone
To talk idly or weep near him/her
To let only women remain with the dying person
For a person in Janaabah or Haydh to be near a dying person
