Visiting The Cemetery

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلىٰ اَهْلِ لَا اِلٰـهَ اِلَّا اللهُ مِنْ اَهْلِ لَا اِلٰـهَ اِلَّا اللهُ

AS-SALAAMU ‘ALAA AHLI LAA ILAAHA IL-LAL-LAAHU MIN AHLI LAA ILAAHA IL-LAL-LAAH

Peace be on the people who are worthy of being among those who declare that there is no God but Allah

As per the hadith of Imam Ali (A.S.), the following du'a is recommended to be recited upon entering a cemetery. An individual who recites the following will be granted Thawab equal to 50 years of worship and his/her sins committed during fifty years of his/her life together with the sins of his/her parents are forgiven.

According to the hadith of Imam Musa al-Kaadhim (A.S.), anyone who cannot visit the graves of their Ai’mmahs should visit the graves of Mumineen in his community to earn similar rewards.
Similarly, Imam Ali ar-Ridha (A.S.) has said that anyone who visits the grave of his Mu’min brother or sister and recites Surah Al Qadr (97) seven times with his hand over the Marhum’s grave while facing Qibla, will protect himself as well as the Marhum from the fear of the Day of Judgement.
When visiting the cemetery, preferably on Thursdays or Fridays, one should observe the following:
Remember death and visualize himself in the grave where he too will face the consequences of his sins and disobedience to Allah (S.W.T.)
Reflect on his creation from earth and his ultimate return to it, acknowledging that he will be held accountable for his deeds on the Day of Judgement
Recite chapters from the Holy Qur’an or du’as for the Ithale Thawab of the deceased
Avoid eating or drinking in the cemetery with the exception of Tabarruk
Maintain silence to avoid distraction from thoughts about death and life in the Hereafter
Do not sit on or pray salaat beside or on graves
