Shrouding The Mayyit

The third wajib act is Kafan (shrouding the body), which is done with three wajib and several mustahab (recommended) pieces of cloth detailed below. Wajib Pieces

Per Islamic Shari’ah, the following pieces of Kafan are obligatory:

Loin Cloth (Lungi): Sometimes described as an apron, this piece of cloth covers the front and back parts of the body from the naval to the knees. It is recommended, however, that this cloth be long enough to cover the body from the chest to the feet
Shirt (Kurta): This piece of cloth is like a long shirt that covers the body from the shoulder to the knees, preferably the ankles
Full Cover (Chaadar): This is a large sheet of cloth that covers the entire body. It is recommended that it be long and wide enough such that the front and back overlap each other and the top and bottom ends, as well as by the chest and hips, can be tied securely with string Mustahab Pieces

Per Islamic Shari’ah, the following pieces of Kafan are not obligatory but recommended:

Briefs: This is a piece of cloth sprinkled with camphor to cover the complete area of the private parts and a strap to tie it around the hips. Ensure that powdered camphor used here does not contain soil from the land of Kerbala
Male Only:
Turban: This is a piece of cloth that is wrapped around the head once with the two ends placed on the chest
Females Only:
Head Cover: This is a piece of cloth large enough to cover the head and neck
Upper Chest Cover: This is a piece of cloth that is wrapped around the whole area of the chest
The following practices related to Kafan are mustahab:

It is recommended that during their lifetime, one should make provisions for his or her own kafan, sidr leaves, and camphor
The obligatory precaution is that each of the three obligatory pieces of the kafan must not be so thin that the limbs of the mayyit can be seen through it. However, if the pieces are such that all three of them together prevent the mayyit from being seen, then it will suffice
It is recommended that the cloth for kafan should be white. It is not permissible to shroud a mayyit with silk cloth and based on obligatory precaution, the cloth should not be woven with gold. There is, however, no problem in using these if no other option is available
If the kafan of a mayyit becomes impure, then it is obligatory to replace it entirely. In the event that it cannot be replaced, the impure part must be washed or cut out even if this takes place after the mayyit has been placed in the grave
Two fresh green twigs of a tree inscribed with Shahadah (Kalma), called Jareedatain, if available, should be kept in the grave with the dead body
For additional guidance, refer to Taudhihul Masae’l (Islamic Laws) of Ayatollah Sistani.

After the Kafan has been put on the body, it should be positioned such that the right shoulder faces Qibla.

The steps to shrouding a male mayyit differ slightly from the steps to shrouding a female mayyit.
