Shrouding a Male Mayyit

The order in which the pieces of Kafan are pre-arranged in the sequence below is to help facilitate when the body is being shrouded. This can be done on a clean and dry surface.

Step 1: Full Cover (Chaadar) | Wajib
This is a large sheet that covers the entire body. It is recommended that it be long and wide enough such that the front and back overlap each other and the top and bottom ends, as well as by the chest and hips, can be tied securely with string.

Step 2: Shirt (Kurta) | Wajib
This piece of cloth is like a long shirt that covers the body from the shoulder to the knees, preferably the ankles. Cut the cloth in the center to create an opening for the head of mayyit. Fold the front of the Tunic to the top in order to place the Loin Cloth and the Briefs.

Step 3: Loin Cloth (Lungi) | Wajib
This piece of cloth covers the front and back parts of the body from the naval to the knees. It is recommended, however, that this cloth be long enough to cover the body from the chest to the ankles.

Step 4: Briefs | Mustahab
This is a piece of cloth sprinkled with camphor to cover the complete area of the private parts and a strap to tie it around the hips. Ensure that powdered camphor used here does not contain soil from the land of Kerbala

Step 5: Turban | Mustahab
This is a piece of cloth that is wrapped around the head once with the two ends placed on the chest.

Method of Shrouding

Place the body on the Kafan laid out, ensuring that the waist of the deceased lines up with the Loin Cloth and the head is close to where the opening for the Shirt has been created.

Cover the private parts with the Briefs if this mustahab pieces are being used.

When wrapping the Loin Cloth, ensure that the right side of the cloth overlaps the left side.

Unfold the Shirt and pass the head through the opening. Tuck excess cloth on the sides of the body and then wrap with the laid out Full Cover (Chaadar).

Prior to tying the Chaadar with the strings by the head, chest, hips, and feet, place the Turban cloth around the head as described in Step 5.
