Ghusl e Mase Mayyit

If an individual, consciously or unconsciously, voluntarily or involuntarily, touches any part of a mayyit – including a bone but not the hair of the decease – which has become completely cold and has not yet been given Ghusl-e-Mayyit, it is then wajib (obligatory) for that person to do Ghusl-e-Mase Mayyit (Ghusl for Touching a Dead Body).

Ghusl-e-Mase Mayyit is not wajib if a person touches a dead body that has not become entirely cold even if the part of the body that he has touched is cold.

Those who perform Ghusl-e-Mayyit for the deceased or handle the body before it has been given the three ghusls are therefore obligated to do Ghusl-e-Mase Mayyit before reciting any prayers or touching the Holy Qur’an. However, if gloves are worn and the person does not touch the body with his bare hands, then it is not necessary to perform Ghusl-e-Mase Mayyit.

Method

The method of performing Ghusl-e-Mase Mayyit is similar to all other Wajib and Mustahab ghusls.

First, wash the head down to the neck. Special care should be taken when washing the head to ensure that water reaches the hair roots.

Then, wash the right side of the body, front and back, from the shoulder down to the foot, ensuring that the water covers part of the neck area.

Lastly, wash the left side of the body, front and back, from the shoulder down to the foot, again ensuring that the water covers part of the neck area.

The above should be done in such a way that water reaches all parts of the skin,
